British fashion photographer Nick Knight wouldn't tell us what those curls hanging in front of model Christy Turlington's face were made of, but we still chose his image for out first cover of 1995. SPECIAL SECTION
THE TRIUMPH OF PHOTOGRAPHY, 1995 - the power and importance of photography just keep growing. Without doubt, the art exhibition of the season is Robert Frank's much discussed retrospective at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. meanwhile, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC has scored with a brilliant show of masterpieces by 19th century French photographer Edouard Baldus. And book publishers everywhere have scrambled to put on an array of the most significant, and downright beautiful, photo books ever seen (including volumes on Frank and Baldus). Here are previews of 13 that you won't want to miss
PHOTO BOOKS YOU OUGHT TO OWN - While we were busily looking at a lineup of magnificent new photo books, we got to wondering - which books should any self respecting photo authority have in her or his library? We know just where to turn to for answers: American Photo's own fearless critics, Vicki Goldberg and Owen Edwards. (Harold Gloom could take a few lessons from these guys)
